The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974, dealing with the protection of the right of privacy of students, govern access to and release of student records. The statute states that educational institutions must give students access to their official records and an opportunity to challenge such records on the grounds that they are inaccurate, misleading, or otherwise inappropriate, that an institution must obtain written consent from students before releasing personally identifiable data about students from records to other than a specific list of exceptions (see Access, below), that students be notified of their rights as enumerated by this document, and that the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare investigate complaints of alleged violations of the Act.
